Baltimore Club Music

So the other day my friend Marjorie aka Dj Gingee expressed some interest about learning more about Baltimore Club. Being that I lived in Baltimore for 13 years and started my dj career there I figured I would drop a little bit of knowledge about this unique and indigenous sound.

Baltimore club or "Club Music" as its commonly referred to in B-more is a blend of chopped staccato house music and hip hop. It was first created in the late 80's by pioneers such as Frank Ski, Miss Tony, and Scottie B. Along the way others such as K-Swift (RIP), Dj Technics, Dj Boobie, and Rod Lee boosted the legitimacy of the genre.

B-more club is based of a 8/4 beat structure with a tempo around 130 bpm. It combines repetitive, looped synths and vocal snippets (often from television shows) over heavy breakbeats and baselines. A lot of the breakbeats are sampled from records such as "Sing Sing" by Gaz and "Think" by Lyn Collins.

B-more club is the soundtrack for Baltimore aka "Charm City". Its attitude and edge reflects on that of the city itself. Its sound has greatly influenced many globetrotting Dj's today. Artist such as Diplo, Tittsworth, Dj Ayers, Spankrock, Bird Peterson and Top Billin' are just a few to use this banging beat structure.

Much love to you B-more. I feel honored to come up as a Dj there. A city with probably more talented Djs per capita than most others…

Here's a short timeline of B-more club tracks and ones influenced by it.

Ode to the Catalyst

When I moved to LA 3 years ago it was a quick decision. My good friend, Mike Russek who had been my LA connect for years informed me of an artist collective downtown which had a live/work opening. I submitted a proposal and was accepted. Within 2 weeks I was on my way. I knew very little about the new environment I was moving into and how it would change my life.

I moved into the Catalyst Artist Collective! The Catalyst was an amazing underground arts collective in the warehouse district downtown. A 15k square foot venue with almost a dozen loft/studios, a 5k square foot main room and a huge rooftop with epic views of downtown LA. If that wasn't enough I became part an amazing family. A dynamic family of some of the most talented people I have ever met.
I was home.

The Catalyst housed artists of every medium. Painting, sculpture, photography, welding, textile, film, culinary arts, fashion design, leather smithing and music. Being an art collective, we designed a wide variety of art shows. One of which was 100 under 100. A holiday season opening in which we hosted 100 artists all with works under $100. Another was Magic Garage. An amazing art show with over a dozen different of musical acts!

Aside from art shows we threw many customized events based on a vision from a specific member. One being, Jesse's "Stop Making Sense" party. It was a viewing party of the Talking Heads epic live concert. It was projected in 1080p with 5.1 turbosound surround sound. It was followed by dj's and live video mixing all over the place. There was a build your own sandwich bar and we shipped in a bunch of hay bales to have a hay covered dance floor. Another was my annual "Skate 'n' Boogie". We would convert the entire main room into a roller rink and bounce, rock, skate and roll. I also held a monthly supper club (post to come). Others include our annual 4th of July rooftop cookout and Rajiv's weekly figure drawing class which included a fresh model every week. We would also host underground dance parties of all flavors with some of LA's biggest promoters. Those parties brought in talent such as Mark Farina and Frankie Chan as well as the occasional celeb such as Prince and Lil Jon. In addition I enjoyed spinning some of the best sets of my life there. Most of which were after hours to just the family. They will always be my favorite audience.

These are just some of the hundreds of great memories.

The Catalyst shut down in January due to building renovation. It had a 6 year run which is legendary in the underground scene. Over those years, thousands of people past through its doors and many left with epic memories. Personally, I think I laughed more in the 3 years I was there than in my entire life. All the sweat and hard work we put in was well worth every moment.

So in closing, Jesse, Misty, Carson, Josh, Avner, Rajiv, Heidi, Grant, Judy, Sage, Flor, Mike,
Aaron Paul, Fitz, Caton, and my Juni, you have all enriched my life in so many ways.

I love you all!

P.S. Stayed tuned for the Catalyst late night dance party greatest hits post!

Patio Beats Mix

So I am currently working on some fresh mixes to post, but in the meantime here's one I did a while ago.

It's called Patio Beats. Its a chill down/midtempo mix. I can't remember the entire track list but it
contains tracks from Nightmares on Wax, Blend Crafters, St. Germaine, and Fort Knox Five to name a
few.

A great mix for dinner parties and cookouts...

Cheers!

Super Bowl Wings

So this past weekend we had a Super Bowl party. Good friends, good food, and a good game (I guess?).
I decided to make my world famous, award winning wings! They haven't won any awards and are not world famous YET!... Props to Fran for the pics!

Sesame Encrusted Chicken Wings w/ Sweet Chile Buffalo Sauce and Basil Bleu Cheese

Ingredients;

1 small jar of black sesame seeds
3/4 cup AP flour
1 tbsp smoked paprika
1 tbsp chile powder
S/P
5 lbs chicken wings
1 gallon peanut oil

3/4 cup any Thai sweet chile sauce
1/2 cup hot sauce (such as Crystal)
3 oz melted butter
3 tbsp rice wine vinegar

1 bottle chunky bleu cheese dressing
1 cup fresh basil

Preparation;

First, pour oil in a nice deep stock pot. Using a candy thermometer bring the temp to 325.
Mix together the first 5 ingredient well then dredge the wings in mixture.
Combine chile sauce, hot sauce, butter and vinegar in sauce pan and simmer.
Quickly blanch the basil in boiling water for 30 seconds then shock in ice bath.
This will bring out a lot of flavor and color from the basil.
Dry basil off and place in food processor with bleu cheese dressing. Pulse until basil is incorporated.
Once oil is up to 325 degrees par-cook the wings for about 3 minutes then remove and let cool for 10.
Bring oil temp up to 350 then drop the wings back in for about 7 to 10 minutes depending on the size of them. This second dip will make them nice and crispy.
Next, put wings on a paper towel or brown paper bag covered sheet pan to let some of the oil drain off.
Season with S/P then dump them in a big mixing bowl with the sauce.
Toss and serve with the Bleu cheese/basil sauce.
